Complete Renovation Guide
Do you have an underutilised garage at home? Converting it into a modern, functional kitchen can not only increase the value of your home but also completely transform the way you use your space. In this blog, we’ll guide you through a full garage renovation, from tearing down walls to installing high-end appliances.
LET THE TRANSFORMATION BEGIN
Here’s a List of Essential Items for a Garage to Kitchen Renovation:
- Sledgehammer, Dust masks & goggles
- Laser level or spirit level
- Tile, hardwood, or luxury vinyl flooring
- Custom or prefabricated cabinetry (I recommend Marquez Cocinas)
- A good Industrial Vacuum Cleaner
IMPORTANT!
Before starting any work, make sure that all measurements and the layout have been carefully considered to ensure everything fits perfectly.
Preparation: Planning & Demolition
Before starting any major renovation, it’s crucial to plan the design and steps of the project. The first step is to assess the current state of the garage: Are the walls and floor in good condition? Are structural modifications needed?
In this project, our first big task was tearing down unnecessary walls to open up the space. We removed old garage doors and other structural elements to create an open-concept layout ideal for a modern kitchen.
Floor Leveling: A Solid Foundation
Floor leveling is essential to install a functional kitchen. An uneven floor can affect everything from appliances to cabinetry and countertops. In this case, leveling wasn’t necessary since the area already had tiles. However, I added vinyl planks to introduce a Scandinavian wood floor aesthetic, perfect for a kitchen that blends resilience with luxury
Wall Reconstruction: Insulation & Design
With the floor semi-ready, we moved on to constructing a bigger entrance wall to provide both stability and an enhanced aesthetic effect. This step was crucial in transforming the garage into both a comfortable kitchen and a living room area. As part of this process, we dismantled a large section of the original wall, including a substantial brick portion. Additionally, we addressed the corner wall, which required careful repair and reinforcement to ensure a seamless transition and a structurally sound finish. This meticulous work is essential for creating a modern and functional kitchen, while also providing a welcoming living space.
Electrical Installation: Preparing for a Modern Kitchen
A modern kitchen needs a robust electrical system. We added new wiring to support all high-end appliances, as well as strategic lighting and outlets for easy access to small appliances.
This step is crucial for meeting safety codes and ensuring an efficient, safe electrical system.
Plumbing & Ventilation Systems
Next, we installed the plumbing for sinks and dishwashers, along with proper ventilation systems, especially for range hoods to keep the kitchen free from smoke. Adequate ventilation also helps control temperature and prevents moisture buildup. However, in this case, an additional ventilation system was not necessary, as the modern kitchen features a state-of-the-art extractor hood that uses advanced technology, effectively removing smoke and odours without the need for traditional ducts.
Did you know? The concept of converting garages into functional living spaces, like home offices or extra bedrooms, has become increasingly popular due to the growing need for more flexible living areas. According to a report by the National Association of Home Builders, garage conversions can provide up to a 75% return on investment, making them a smart choice for homeowners looking to increase their property’s value.
Final Touches: A Luxury Kitchen
Finally, we reached the most exciting part: adding the finishing touches. In this case, the customer had already purchased a fully assembled kitchen and a range of smart appliances. These additions not only enhance functionality but also contribute a touch of luxury and sophistication. The smart appliances integrate seamlessly with the overall design, delivering both modern convenience and a minimalist aesthetic. The result is a kitchen that combines high-end technology with a sleek, streamlined look
Conclusion
Transforming a garage into a luxury kitchen and a stylish living area is a project that demands careful planning, skilled craftsmanship, and meticulous attention to detail. It’s important to note that such renovations are not inexpensive; they require significant investment in skilled labor and time. To avoid unpleasant surprises, it’s essential to clearly outline what is included in the budget and what may incur additional costs. The end result, however, is a beautifully renovated space that enhances functionality and adds a modern touch to your home. Whether it’s for family gatherings or everyday living, this newly created area will provide both comfort and elegance.
